What exactly is "marketing"?

In the general sense, the topic of marketing can go on for days and days. But we haven't got that much time. Why not, you may be asking? Because if you have the idea to "market" your business and services to potentially willing customers or clients who might want to book you, then the time is of the essence.

What is marketing, you may be wondering? Well, marketing is a super broad term or phrase that is meant to be used as an action verb, that is supposed to be something that you do to get other people excited about you. Marketing is a lot like when you see a commercial on television or on the Internet. Someone is selling something, and makes a commercial to make you want to buy it. It is as simple as that, right? Yes and no, but mostly no. We can use plumber marketing as an example. As a plumber you need to find plumbing customers, and the way to do that is to get in front of the people who need your services the most.

Let's start from the beginning, as we said, there is not a lot of time. Marketing is the strategic techniques or strategies that a business owner utilizes to bring customers closer to the products or services being offered, in the attempt to convince the customer to book a service or buy the business owner's wares. This definition is getting drilled down quite nicely. There are a few distinctions that need to be added in here, after which this process will be made crystal clear.

First of all, yes, marketing is the capturing of an audience, getting their attention, to promote a product or service (let's stick with service such as hiring a plumber), to get the customer to want to book a service to meet their needs. If the demographic has been identified, and you know exactly who needs your services, then you are well on your way to getting in front of the right customers to get their needs met. You also need the expertise to make their dreams come true (Read: solve their immediate "pain" or problem).

Once the customer is identified, and you know who you want to market to, then you need to get to steppin' and market to this audience to an inch of your life, right? Well, another yes and no. You want to market to people who are the most likely to book your services right now, but you also want to market to people who will possibly need your services in the future too. The people who have already used your service and are happy with you don't necessarily need any marketing, but they are worth their weight in gold to get a referral. A referral is someone who sends a friend to you based on the good word from the friend, and these always have the chance to lead to great business opportunities, if you handle it right.

Next, you need to take careful consideration on how you are going to be marketing your services. Your ads or commercials or social media, whatever you use, needs to be an accurate representation of who you are, what you can do, and what you have already done. You need to leave a stream of happy and satisfied customers in your wake, every time you perform your services. That's right, and that is how it is done to build your book of business to new heights.

Finally, what was all this talk about time, why was it so important to mention it? Well, glad you asked about that too. The sooner you figure out how to market successfully to your customers, the ones with the greatest likelihood of actually booking your services, the better. The reason that you are under the time constraint of "get it done immediately," or more accurately "it was due yesterday," is because your competitors are also out there doing the exact same thing. And yes, they will "take," steal, earn, get, produce, pounce on, or acquire your customers instead of you if given half the chance. The only way you don't let it happen, is to not let it happen!

There you have it, this is the basics as to why you need to start marketing right now to your customer base, increase your customer base and consider even hiring someone else to do your marketing for you if you don't have a clue how to do it yourself. Time's a wasting. Make the decision to be successful, and you are also making the broader decision to use marketing to your advantage to grow your customer base right now. Success will follow, it has to, there is really no other way!
