There are common keyword mistakes that web beginners make that should be avoided. Being aware of the mistakes can help you choose the correct keywords for optimal web traffic instead of harming your rankings.


  • Proper Keyword research is very time consuming and is not fun. Strategically putting the keyword in the right spot in your text just doesn’t work anymore. You can’t ignore them or think you know what your audience is looking for. What words will they use to search and which terms are they searching for? Are your keywords competitive or less searched for? Compile a large list of words you would like to rank that focuses on your business needs.


  • While your keywords should be realistic, if your business is new, it’s hard to rank in competitive niches. Long tail keywords are easier to rank and have a higher chance on a click through. For example, if you have a restaurant and do a blog about cooking, then the keyword cooking will be hard to rank. Turn it into a long tail keyword that may be aimed at a particular audience. If your cooking is aimed at retired people, you could use, cooking for retired people, or cooking tips for retired people, or healthy cooking for retired people. Using long tail keywords is a great strategy to broaden but also tightening up the search.


  • What is the intent behind your keywords? Are searchers looking for a specific website (navigational intent), or information (informational intent), or to buy a product (transactional or commercial intent). Search engines will give lookers the exact answer they are looking for. If your content doesn’t match, they won’t find you.


  • The search intent is very important. Without it, your potential visitors or shoppers won’t get there, because even though you have something to offer them, they won’t know how to get there. The keywords you rank should be the same ones your customers are looking for. If you’re marketing hamburgers for a particular event like a cookout, customers won’t search for cookout hamburgers, but they, may search for hamburgers for a cookout, or gourmet hamburgers for a cookout. Don’t make your longtail keywords so long that a looker has to write a paragraph to find you. Long tail keywords may bring you less traffic, but it may convert your searchers to buyer’s vs niche specific keywords may bring you no one.


  • If you write a blog and you are focusing on a single keyword, then include similar phrases, for example, if you are writing about cocktail meatballs, you could use, cocktail meatball recipes and also cocktail meatball formulas or cocktail meatball ingredients. Your focus was the cocktail meatballs, but if lookers are searching for recipes, you got them.
