Are You Ready to Advise Customers on Seawater Flood Damage?

Special damage can occur with salt from saltwater after a flood.

Most people think of floodwaters and picture the over spill of a river or a stream. Although this is the most common type of flood occurrence, sea water can also damage a property differently – based on the composition of the salt in the water. Understanding how sea water affects properties can help you to advise your customers better, when they experience water damage from seawater. Any time that sea water floods a residential or commercial property, it will leave salt by-products in its wake. Sea water can contain chloride, sulfide and nitride ions of salt that have the potential to react with surfaces in a residential or commercial property.

It may be the case that you have customers who live in regions that has experienced significant changes in sea levels in coastal property areas. When rising sea levels saturate low-lying wetlands and invade on dry land, the results can be devastating. After a storm near coastal regions, the invaded salt and sea water flow can seep into low area estuaries, nearby groundwater aquifers and create imbalances for erosion on coastal beach regions.

When there is a sea level change that raises water levels, the ocean height will increase in respect to that region. In this case, there may be significantly more flooding in these areas during seasonal and monthly high tides, and during storms that continue to force more water up and toward residential and commercial properties in the region.

Some coastal residential and commercial towns and cities have noted “nuisance” flood level maximum thresholds. This is the case where there is a minor storm that floods streets and temporarily overwhelms storm drains in the community. But if this becomes a recurring problem with flooding, there may also be beach erosion other building and structural damage issues will often be the result.

It is noted that around 8.6 million people live near coastal flooding regions, which makes these residential owners highly susceptible to experiencing a costal flood that will dramatically affect their home. Businesses can be impacted too, and it is estimated that over $1 trillion worth of residential and commercial property are situated at or a few feet above current sea level in states across the country. That being said, these customers need your help and need it now.
